The grocery store shelves are loaded with amazing citrus this time of year. I find myself filling up on Cuties, Cara Cara oranges, mandarins and any other orange fruit I can get my hand on. I love the sweet-tart juxtaposition of them. However, even with all of the choices, my most favorite still remains the lowly orange. It is such a portable, satisfying snack and with only about 85 calories and no fat, cholesterol or sodium, it a healthy addition to any diet.
Everyone know that oranges are loaded with vitamin c, an antioxidant that helps protect cells from the damage caused by free radicals but what are some of its other benefits?
Oranges are loaded with potassium, an electrolyte mineral important for facilitating electricity to flow through your body to keep your heart beating properly. Potassium is also important for regulating fluid balance, muscle contractions and nerve signals.
Oranges are high in fiber (3 grams per medium orange) helping keep you regular, lower cholesterol and helping to maintain blood sugar balance, especially in people with diabetes.
Oranges are high in lutein, beta-carotene and zeaxanthin, which help improve eye health.
Oranges also provide citrus limonoids, important in the fight against cancer.
With all of these amazing health benefits, how soon will you get your orange on?
