Today I am prepping for a family camping trip which means I have been in the kitchen furiously baking bars and other snacks. I am so excited because I whipped up a batch of Seven Seed Bars. These are one of my favorite dense, yummy treats that I rarely get around to making. Usually the bars have macadamia nuts in them but I was out of macadamia nuts so opted to go with walnuts instead. I love walnuts for all their amazing health benefits. Look below for all the reasons you should add walnuts to your diet.
Walnuts are a significant source of alpha lipoic acid (ALA), an essential fatty acid we must get from our diet. Studies have shown that each gram of ALA you eat per day lowers your risk of death from heart disease by 10%.
Eating walnuts may support the beneficial bacteria in your gut. Eating walnuts has been shown to raise butyrate, a fat that nourishes your gut and encourages a healthy gut.
Eating walnuts has been found to support male fertility by improving sperm shape, vitality and mobility.
Eating a 1.5-ounce serving of walnuts a day may help lower heart disease risk by decreasing damaging cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
Walnuts are a good source of melatonin, an important hormone for regulating your body clock and helping with sleep.
Walnuts are also a good source of magnesium, an important mineral for regulating muscle and nerve function, blood sugar levels, and blood pressure, calming the nervous system and producing protein, bone, and DNA.
After reading all these benefits, I can’t wait to dig into my Seven Seed Bars. What are your favorite ways to eat walnuts?
