It seems that since last week’s blog post the health story here in the United States has taken a much more dire direction. Many people are panicking and are holed up in their houses to stem the tide of new infections. We have all seen the news about handwashing and social distancing to prevent infection but I thought it might be helpful to focus on some foods you might want to include in your diet to help boost your immune system.
Vitamin C rich foods: Vitamin C has long been known as an important vitamin for the immune system. Foods such as citrus, kiwi, Brussel sprouts and bell peppers are all good additions to your diet.
Vitamin A Rich foods: Vitamin A is important in the development of the immune system and plays regulatory roles in cellular immune responses. Butter nut squash, carrots, sweet potatoes, salmon and tuna are all rich in Vitamin A.
Leaf Green Veggies: Leafy green vegetables are loaded with antioxidants to support your immune system. Look for kale, spinach, chard, broccoli, water cress and collard greens.
Garlic: Garlic is a natural anti-viral that helps ward off infection.
Avoid sugar and other foods that are quickly converted into sugar like alcohol and white flour products. Sugar is an immune suppressant.
In this time of stress and anxiety, it is important to do all that you can to protect and bolster your immune system.
