The weather has been tricky so far this summer. We might start a week with three days of sun and heat, then two days of intermittent drizzle and chillier air, followed by two days with a mix of clouds and sun and 70 degrees. Mother Nature is playing games with us. And she always gets to decide the outcome of the game.
Summer can be like that – unpredictable and spontaneous – speckled with day trips, weekends away and family vacations, variant kids’ camp schedules, summer sports, all the dentist and doctors appointments we try to cram into these three months, happy hours, days on the River, and days on the green. All this fun can wreak havoc on our workout schedule. Getting up early can be harder when we go harder during the waking hours. We can start playing games with our fitness. And we are inherently the decider of the outcome of the game.
As a lover of a good time, particularly under a warm, sunny sky in a cute sundress, I’m here to say – make the most of these months! As a fitness fanatic and your coach, I’m here to say – stick with your weekly workout schedule. You can do both! If your desire is to keep making progress and to retain the fruit of your hard work from the colder months (READ: strength, physique, mobility, cardio fitness level,) you must keep up the consistency in the warm months. For example, a hike in Forest Park with a latte and your lover is not the same as the 6 or 7 am Burn, even if said hike occurs at 6 or 7 am. Biking three miles to and from work in the summer isn’t the same as taking The Wheelhouse. (Sorry not sorry.) Your muscles know the difference regardless of what your brain is telling you. Stick with your regular program and add the hikes, the leisurely bike rides, and the happy hours. This game is in your hands – and it’s a game you can win, so why not go for the win? Adding recreational movement to a solid workout week is a slam dunk!
In fun and fitness,

Many of you know that two of our boys, Atticus and Forrest, are working in Alaska processing fresh-caught fish with a local Portland business – Kenai Red Fish Company. Our friend, Clint Benson, owns and operates the business with his wife and daughters. Since we are in the family now, Clint is offering us, The Refinery, a 15% discount on shares into their CSF (community-supported fishery) where you will receive a monthly or bi-monthly delivery of their fish to your door. You choose the quantity and the kind of salmon you want. Your omega-3 and protein intake is about to increase at the highest quality available. Choose your share by August!
Get the details below and check out their website (www.kenairedfc.com) and IG page (@kenairedfishingcompany):
Kenai-Red Fish Company (KRFC) is a Community Supported Fishery (CSF) that proudly delivers high quality, wild-caught and sustainably harvested Alaskan seafood to consumers in select markets in the U.S. They are part of a vibrant CSF movement that supports small-boat fishing families, follows responsible fishing practices and offers a clear and direct supply chain to ensure that consumers are not only getting the highest quality product available anywhere but know exactly where their seafood comes from. By purchasing a share from them, your next seafood dinner is direct from the boat to your table.
Their vision is to bring their salmon to the tables of those who care about:
- a direct relationship with their fisherman
- healthy eating
- sustainable fishery practices
- support of a family owned small scale business
- the origin’s and handling of what they eat
Use promo code REFINERY at check out to save 15%. They will then start distribution in September once the fishing season concludes.
Wishing all of you a safe and happy Fourth!
