Post-Workout Replenishers

September 18, 2014 by Refinery Fitness

Good Morning Everyone!

I had this killer workout the other day at The Refinery, of course.  Thank you Ashleigh for kicking my butt!

Anyhow, it was awesome! I felt like I had toned every muscle in my body.

You’ve done those kinds of workouts too, right?
You can feel yourself get leaner and meaner by the moment…

UNLESS you aren’t refueling your body properly afterwards!

It is so important to refuel your body after your workout and many people don’t do that and then feel zonked later in the day.

Today, I want to share a few of my favorite post-workout replenishers that you can  have after a workout to feel good and energized!

And no, I’m not referring to your protein bar from the drugstore that contains a ton of additives and chemicals that are made in a lab.

To get yourself feeling refreshed, rehydrated and energized post-workout try my Homemade Watermelon Gatorade and Maca Superfood Balls. They are a great combination of  fiber, protein, and healthy fats to get your muscles recovering from that killer workout!

First, I want you to hydrate your body.  Pure water is AMAZING, but sometime you need to balance out those electrolytes after a particularly sweaty session.

Both Watermelon and Coconut Water contain large quantities of three key electrolytes: potassium, sodium, and magnesium. These minerals are especially important for exercise. Potassium and sodium are critical for muscle contraction and proper functioning of nerves while magnesium enables the delivery of oxygen to contracting muscles.  Good stuff!

Instead of reaching for the pre-made SUGARY Gatorade.  Make your own natural one which tastes 10 times better.

Homemade Watermelon Gatorade:

½ cup COLD (or even frozen) Cubed Seedless Watermelon
1 cup coconut water (I love 100% Raw Harmless Harvest Coconut Water)
Pinch of Himalayan sea salt

Blend ingredients. Enjoy!

Another one of my favorite post-workout snacks are my Coconut Maca Superfood Balls.  These babies contain the trifecta of fiber, protein and good fat with the added benefit of the superfood- MACA!  Maca boosts your energy and stamina.

Coconut Maca Superfood Balls
Makes about 24 tbsp balls.  Serving Size= 2 Balls

INGREDIENTS:
1 cup raw almonds (or other raw nuts – walnuts and pecans are great variations)
1 1/2 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
3/4 cup packed soft Mejool dates, pits removed (soak in water for a few hours if they are not soft enough)
1 tablespoon coconut oil
1 tablespoon Grade B maple syrup
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1 1/2 tablespoons Maca powder

DIRECTIONS:
1. Add all ingredients to a food processor and blend until a course “dough” has formed.  You want a crumbly texture that sticks together when pinched.  If it’s too dry, add a teaspoon of water at a time until you reach the right consistency.  If it’s too wet, add a bit more shredded coconut.
2. I like to roll into small balls (about 1 tbsp of dough each), but you can make bigger sizes if you wish.
3.  Serve immediately or store in a closed container in the refrigerator. Keeps for about 5 days in the refrigerator. If they last that long!

Enjoy!

Give both of these a try after your next KILLER workout!
