The last few weeks we have been talking about the craziness of the holiday season. With all the parties and shopping, travel and family time, it can feel like there is no time to rest and relax. Health experts would argue that given all the craziness this is one of the most important times to slow down. One place where slowing down is most important is while eating. I know it can feel hard to do because we are conditioned to rush through our meals without paying attention to what is going into our mouths but slowing down can have profound impacts on our health and well -being.
Studies have shown that eating slowly leads to consuming fewer calories and feeling fuller longer. These two factors may contribute to weigh loss.
Be sure to chew your food thoroughly. Not only will this slow down your consumption but it will also improve digestion. You should chew your food until the texture is such that you cannot determine what type of food is in your mouth.
Ways to slow down your eating include:
Start each meal by taking the time to smell and admire the beautiful meal you have created.
Put away all distractions including phones, magazines and tv so you can pay attention to what you are eating.
Take a drink between bites.
Put your fork down between bites.
Adding these small tweaks could lead to a more relaxed and healthy you in the New Year.
