Good Evening and Happy Sunday!
I must give a shout-out to the Refinery Crew that are participating in the Bliss Detox Spring Fling! You guys rock and I am so proud of your hard work and dedication to the detox. I am hearing reports of all the awesome progress you are making.
For some this is shedding some unwanted pounds and for others, it is increased energy, better digestion, deep sleep, less achey joints, clarity of mind, and overall feeling of being back in control of your eats and tapping into your body awareness. This is HUGE!
Kudos to you ALL!
Now, one of the things we have been having for breakfast this past week are SMOOTHIES! I love them.
As you know, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and sometimes it just doesn’t fit into our schedule the way it should.
How we begin the day will determine how the rest of the day goes. It will determine if we feel energized or lethargic. What we put in our bellies is directly related to how we physically feel. So if you are a skip breakfast and grab the coffee mug morning person, then this blog is totally for you.
We all need and crave energy, I know I do! Sometimes it is so easy to want to grab a quick bowl of cereal or even forget breakfast and just get through the morning on 1-2 cups of coffee for the energy needed to survive the day. I don’t want you to just survive through the day though, I want you to thrive through the day. I also don’t want you to go on the “crash and crave” roller coaster for the entire day. If you begin your morning with caffeinated coffee and sugar you will crash, and you will be either too tired to make it through your responsibilities or you will be reaching for another cup of coffee to get through a few more hours.
That is why smoothies are another quick alternative to a fast breakfast that can help energize us throughout the entire day. When you toss in some greens, a little fruit, a clean source of protein powder, and a healthy liquid like coconut water you are bound to feel energetic and ready to take on the day. Starting the day with a smoothie also gives you well needed antioxidants which help protect our bodies from free radicals, and it is a great low glycemic start. Eating a low glycemic breakfast will help curb your sugar cravings for the entire day and it will also help with not crashing.
A smoothie is a blend of whole foods. Nothing is removed (except for non-edible things, like the peel of a banana). The best part is you can make a big batch of smoothies the night before and they will keep in the fridge for up to three days. You can just grab and go. No excuses.
Below is one of my favorite Smoothie Recipes and you can feel free to add some additional superfoods!
Abby’s Basic Green Smoothie
1 cup coconut water
1 cups fresh spinach
1 cup fresh kale
1/2 cup of sliced cucumbers
1/2 frozen banana
1 -2 scoops favorite plant-based protein powder ( I love Thorne Medipro Vegan Vanilla)
1 tbsp chia seeds
1/2 tbsp of raw honey or agave (you can add a few drops of liquid stevia instead) (optional)
Place all ingredients in blender. Blend until smooth and all ingredients are blended. Pour in a large glass and enjoy!
I often jazz my smoothie up with all sorts of superfoods. Here are some of my favorite smoothie additions. These ingredients are also helpful if you’re trying to offset the veggie taste.
Avocados are one of my staples. They add good fats, which lower blood cholesterol, plus Vitamin E, B vitamins and folic acid. They also make your drink creamier.
Freeze your bananas and add them to smoothies for a super creamy consistency. The potassium in bananas helps fight high blood pressure and they are known as a natural antacid.
Nut butters give your smoothies a protein kick. Check the ingredient label to make sure your jar contains nuts only.
Almond butter (organic and raw, when possible) is my favorite variety, but you can try everything from sunflower to cashew. Sunflower butter is my second fav!
A teaspoon of Cinnamon adds flavor in a snap and helps to balance blood sugar.
Coconut water (loaded with electrolytes) adds a tropical taste.
E3Live is blue-green algae that is said to restore overall body/mind balance by improving immune, endocrine, nervous, gastrointestinal and cardiovascular systems. E3Live provides 65 easily absorbed vitamins, minerals and enzymes and contains a powerful kick of chlorophyll.
Protein powder ( I love Thorne Medipro Vegan--* contact me if you are interested in ordering some)
Be Creative and Have Fun!
Next time you want a quick breakfast try a delicious smoothie that will leave you feeling energized and motivated. A morning smoothie will provide your body with the nutrients it needs to produce natural energy and naturally boost your metabolism. So what are you reaching for tomorrow morning? I know I will be pulling out my blender and getting ready for some long lasting energy!
Next week, I will talk about the difference between Juicing and Blending and which one is better : )
