The One Day Detox

December 14, 2014 by Refinery Fitness

Good Morning and Happy Sunday!

How are your Holidays going so far?  I hope well.

This season is magical and fun but it can also wear you out with all the social functions and extra goodies that sneak into your diet this time of year- champagne, wine, beer, rich food and sweet treats and the list goes on.

I often get emails and texts from clients asking me what they can do to get back on track ASAP after a night of debauchery.

This is my go-to when I need to get “back on track” when my eating has not been stellar and I feel bloated, tired and irritable : (

I usually follow this plan for 1-day to reboot my digestive system but have followed the plan for up to 3 days depending on how I feel. I recommend taking it one day at a time and to listen to your body.

WELCOME to the BLISS METHOD ONE-DAY DETOX

The following dishes give your digestive system a rest from processed foods and allergens like dairy and gluten. Loading up on the season’s fibrous fruits and vegetables helps remove toxins; they’re eliminated by binding to fiber. Skip your morning coffee (if you can) and evening glass of wine (both overwork the liver, the organ we’re aiming to support); opt for water and herbal tea instead. Remember this is just one day of your life.

Are you ready to dive in?

Ready, set, go!

1. Start your day off with 8 oz warm water with a squeeze of lemon, 1 tbsp of raw Apple Cider Vinegar  (ACV) and a  dash of cayenne pepper to stimulate the liver and release digestive enzymes.

2. Make a pitcher of water with the addition of 1 lemon sliced, 1/2 a cucumber sliced, 10 sprigs of mint. The Goal is to drink the whole pitcher of water by the end of the day.

This Detox is all about hydrating the body and flushing toxins out of the system.

After your warm water with lemon, ACV and cayenne, pick from one of the juice/smoothie recipes below:
Green BLISS Smoothie

The Green Bliss Smoothie

• 6 chopped romaine leaves
• 4 Kale Leaves
• 1/2 cup fresh parsley sprigs
• 1/2 cup chopped pineapple (you can use frozen organic)
• 1 inch fresh ginger, peeled and chopped
• 1 1/2 cups coconut water or filtered water

Combine above ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

Rise and Shine Juice

• 5 to 6 ounces baby spinach leaves, rinsed
• 1 green apple, halved and cored
• 2 medium carrots, scrubbed
• 2 celery sticks
• 1/2 large lemon
• One 2-inch piece ginger, peeled
• Ice

Directions

Press the spinach, apples, carrots, celery, lemon juice and ginger through a juice maker, according to the manufacturer’s directions. Pour the juice into 2 ice-filled glasses and serve.

Follow your smoothie/juice with a cup of herbal tea. I know, giving up your morning cup of Joe can be tough but that is why it is a One-Day Detox.

You can do anything for ONE DAY!

Herbal Tea Suggestions:

Rishi Tea’s Tumeric Ginger Herbal Tea

Traditional Medicinals Lemon Everyday Detox Tea

Tea of Republic Get Clean Tea

The best part is that you can have as many cups of herbal tea as you want! Drink up.

You also get to have two snacks per day.  If you feel like you need a Mid- Morning Snack pick from the snack list below:

• Apple sliced, sprinkled with cinnamon + 1 tbsp natural nut butter
• Kale Chips
• 1/2 cup fresh pineapple chunks with 8 walnuts chopped
• 1 whole grapefruit, sliced in half, sprinkled with cinnamon and broiled for 1 minute
• Handful of raw nuts- about 1 ounce, no more
• 1 tbsp raw cacoa nibs + 1 tbsp goji berries

Lunch will be a beautiful detoxifying salad plus plenty of liquids, water + tea.

Drink 2 glasses of water before eating lunch. Have a cup of tea with lunch.

BeetAvocadoKale

Beet, Avocado and Kale Salad

  • 2 beets, peeled and grated or thinly sliced
  • 4 stalks celery, thinly sliced
  • 1 English cucumber, seeded, thinly sliced
  • 2 scallions (green parts only), thinly sliced
  • 1 bunch Lacinato Kale, thinly sliced, spine removed
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 avocado, diced
  • 3 tablespoons sunflower seeds, toasted

In a large bowl, toss beets, celery, cucumber, and scallions.

In another bowl, add kale, olive oil and lemon juice. Gently massage the kale for a few minutes until leaves soften and become bright green. To serve, toss 2 cups of the beet mixture with the kale. Top with avocado and sunflower seeds.

Season with sea salt and black pepper, to taste.

I love this salad! You will have leftovers so you can have it again for lunch tomorrow : )

Mid –Afternoon Snack=

2 glasses of water and 1 cup of herbal tea plus one snack from the snack list:

• Apple sliced, sprinkled with cinnamon + 1 tbsp natural nut butter
• Kale Chips
• 1/2 cup fresh pineapple chunks with 8 walnuts chopped
• 1 whole grapefruit, sliced in half, sprinkled with cinnamon and broiled for 1 minute
• Handful of nuts- about 1 ounce, no more
• 1 tbsp raw cacoa nibs + 1 tbsp goji berries

Dinner = A Nourishing Soup + more water and tea!

Creamy Broccoli Spinach Kale Soup

  • 1 Tbsp coconut, avocado or extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 4 cups vegetable broth or bone broth of choice
  • 1 head broccoli, trimmed and chopped (6 cups)
  • 2 cups fresh spinach
  • 1 cup kale, chopped
  • 1 avocado, chopped, plus more for garnish
  • Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • Drizzle with avocado oil,  extra-virgin olive oil, or coconut milk and extra red pepper flakes

Directions

  1. Heat oil in a medium pot over medium heat. Add onion, garlic, and pepper flakes and cook, stirring, until tender, 6 to 8 minutes. Add broth and bring to a boil. Add broccoli and cook, covered, until bright green and tender, about 2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Remove from heat, stir in spinach and kale, and let cool slightly.
  2. Transfer soup to blend and puree with avocado. Adjust seasoning. Garnish with avocado and a drizzle of avocado oil, olive oil or coconut milk would be nice too.

Evening Time:

By this time you will be fully hydrated. Your meals were extremely clean and you should feel proud of yourself. I recommend keeping yourself busy until be time by reading a book, doing gentle stretches and drinking tea. It is okay to feel a bit hungry. I promise that it will dissipate and no one has ever starved from doing a one-day detox! When you wake up in the morning you should feel cleaner, thinner and more energized. You have rebooted your system and it will be easier for you to get back to your healthy lifestyle. If you do not feel better, you may want to continue this detox for two more days. Listen to your body.

Pop on and let me know how it goes!
