Now, at our Thanksgiving dinner table we got into a bit of a debate over FATS. Some of our guests thought they were EVIL and I felt the need to share all the reasons FATS were good for you and actually essential to a healthy diet.: )
Why fats are good for you…
Since 1980s, Fats have been thought responsible for the increase in obesity in this country. Interestingly enough, since then the obesity rate has only gone up and up and up. Ever wondered why?
Fats are an essential part of any diet. The important thing is to eat healthy fats. It’s the non-healthy trans fat (in processed foods) that will kill you.
Fats aid in digestion, allowing more nutrients to be absorbed though the intestines. This is what gives you shiny hair & flawless skin. It also increases your metabolism.
I grew up in the 80’s and there was a period of time that I ate a ton of the fat-free foods that were thought of as healthier substitutions. I remember feeling virtuous eating Snackwell Cookies because they were FAT-FREE ( I was not concerned about all the added Sugar).
I found that these products made me sick. And it didn’t help me lose weight either. But I was terrified to eat FAT. No avocados, butter, olive oil or nuts for me. No way, Jose!
As I dove into my studies at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, I learned I needed to add FAT back into my diet even though I was scared. I found that I felt so much better when I returned to eating REAL food like organic grass-fed butter, olive oil and whole eggs.
I actually find I am more satiated after a meal because my body is getting all the nutrients it needs from eating whole foods. My craving for junk food is gone. My skin is glowing, my hair is shiny and my nails are strong. The benefits of good fats are endless.
Here is a list of good for you fats:
- Extra virgin olive oil
- Avocados
- Coconut oil
- Eggs
- Nuts & Seeds
Make sure you are incorporating these good fats into your diet daily!
Now before I scurry off, I wanted to share my Healthy Holiday Gift List with you. It tis the season of giving and I have rounded up some Healthy and Inspiring Gifts that you can feel good about giving to your loved ones.
